Remember how I got a hamster two weeks ago? He is now named Baby. I have learned a lot of interesting new things while having Baby, and I am still continuing to learn. Baby is a very curious hamster, and loves to explore. His ways of exploring are smelling and nipping things. When we first got him, he was nipping our fingers, and we weren’t sure why. We figured out that he probably thought our fingers were food, and he was exploring them!
He eats a lot of the time, and whenever I put food in his cage, it is always gone in a little bit! I think that he is burying it, but I am not sure. He is really chubby too! I think I might need to put him on a diet!
I feed him hamster food and sometimes treats. For treats I usually give him spinach or carrot pieces, and he loves them.
Hamsters also have a lot of energy. The best ways to get them to exercise are by putting them in a ball or having them run on a wheel. Putting them in a ball takes more time, because you have to keep an eye on them. But, when they run on a wheel, they are in their cage, so they are safe. Both options are great, but one is more convenient. You should try to do both, if you can.
Baby also discovered another way to exercise that I didn’t even think of. Rock climbing the bars of his cage! It probably isn’t too safe for him to do that, just in case he fell, but there is nothing I can do about it.
I bought him a simple wire cage from Pet Smart, and I am very happy with it. It is just the right size, and still gives him room to run around. I bought him a National Geographic small wood hut, and he loves it! It is very cool because he sleeps inside of it, and he can climb the top like a bridge. Two things in one! The best part is that it is all natural and made of real wood, so it doesn’t matter if he chews at it.
Also, I made him a house out of a tissue box. At first I wasn’t sure if it was safe, but as long as the dye doesn’t come off when you put water on it, it is good. If you put a paper towel roll in his cage so he can go through it he will have a great time! Just make sure it is big enough, so he doesn’t get stuck!
Every hamster is different with how they like their cage. Some don’t want their things moved, while others love a change in scenery. Mine likes to have a new environment every week, so I am having fun creating new worlds for him.
Another big thing about having a hamster is that they are nocturnal. You have to make sure to get a silent wheel, because if you hear noises all night it will get annoying.
Below I included pictures of Baby. Stay tuned for the next post!
So Adorable! Can’t wait to meet Baby.
Thank you Hannah! Guess what… I am bringing him for Thanksgiving! So excited!!!
Oh my gosh!! So cute! He definitely fits right into the family. . . I mean rock climbing, likes quality wooden furniture, needs “new” and “different” things or gets bored. . . I feel like I’m describing your father. Anyway, his personality seems to be a match for the household. What a creative idea- designing little worlds for him! How cool would it be if you could design and make animal products that are sold as sets and marketed as “little worlds” for your caged pets. It’s like stage “set and design” on a smaller scale. I mean, you could take that in so many directions! Animal lovers would totally buy it!! Well, can’t wait to meet Baby at Thanksgiving. I will be prepared with plenty of spinach and carrots because- of course- I need to establish myself as “favorite Aunt.”
Thank you so much for commenting! Yeah, he definitely fits into the family! Your idea about the pet worlds is so good! I will have to think about that. And I am pretty sure you will be one of the number one aunts!
Too cute! Welcome to the family, Baby! Loved reading this, Amelie..your writing and expression is so on point! (what a gift)
