Just One Prayer

“Sometimes, it takes just one prayer to change everything.”
-Anonymous

These were the words I kept hearing in my head all night. Looking for quotes online, this one came up and immediately caught my eye. So I spent some time thinking it over.

My first thought was “wow”. The simplicity of how just nine words could express a million emotions and thoughts amazed me. And the truth of it all brought out exactly what our faith is based upon. It just takes one sincere heartfelt prayer. You could have not prayed in years, or in fact, ever before. You could have not known God before that moment, or you could have just not thought about him recently. It would be at any time in your life. Any length, on any topic. But just one prayer could change your world.

Although so simple that I can see it just passing by, it is impossible to deny the hidden truth of that thought. Of course, as I often tend to forget, you can’t just believe that God will answer your prayer immediately. Sometimes it takes weeks, months, years, or a lifetime, but I don’t think this quote is implying that. It is just the idea that it could be one prayer. Maybe that is not the case often, maybe you don’t even realize it at first. But it could just be one prayer. And that idea is almost too amazing to understand.

Even further on than just the prayer being answered, is the belief that someone is listening to that one prayer. Over and over again, there are millions and millions and millions of prayers every day. Yet God is listening to each and every one of them. Not one prayer goes ignored. And to pray is one thing, but to really believe someone is listening is another.

So earlier tonight I sat down on my bed. I opened my window and listened to the calm noises outside. I closed my eyes, and I just prayed.

It doesn’t have to be long. It doesn’t have to be planned out or well written. It just has to be said.

So I said my prayer, and I know it is one of many. Now it’s your turn.

God is listening.

  1. You’re so right. Every prayer that you say has an impact you may never fully understand. No matter who or what it is for, your prayer is heard and in some way may be fulfilled. It is so important not to underestimate the power of prayer in daily life. Sometimes it is hard to see how your prayer is helping, but that’s faith. It’s believing in the things you may not even see at first. If you believe that God is listening to each one, than you must also believe that God will try to fulfill it. Sometimes it isn’t the right time or place to answer it and sometimes it’s exactly the perfect time. So you keep doing it with your true belief that you are heard. Prayer is powerful. Thank you for this beautiful post, Ami!
